August Alsina

August Alsina started using music as an escape from a very young age. He started by making covers of different songs and posting his videos on YouTube. Faced with difficult circumstances around him in his hometown of New Orleans, he used music to get out of homelessness and bad situations. He was discovered by Noontime of NNTME Muco. Alsina released his debut mixtape "The Product" in 2012. In May of 2013, he paired up with DJ drama and Gangsta Grillz. This mixtape featured his breakout single "I Luv This Shit" featuring Trinidad James. MTV named him one of 2013's Fab 5. His independent video "Downtown" ft. Kidd Kidd generated 8 million views. This autobiographical song would become the title track of Alsina's first official release on Def Jam, an 8-song EP entitled Downtown: Life Under the Gun. It featured collabs with Trinidad, Curren$y and Rich Homie Quan. His single "I Luv This Shit" started catching radio play and became the #1 record on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Chart. He then recruited Chris Brown and Trey Songz for the "I Luv This Shit" remix which gave them a spot on the 2014 BET Awards stage. August released his debut album, Testimony, in April 2014. It sold 67,000 units in the first week making it the #1 debut album, #1 R&B album, and #2 overall on the Billboard Top 200. In 2015, he released his second album, This Thing Called Life, and continues to release music in 2017 with "Wait" and "Drugs".
