Big Sean started rapping at 12 years old at the progressive Waldorf School in Detroit. In high school he then proceeded to form a duo and won a “Friday Night Cipher” MC contest. This earned them a spot every Friday night to rap live for a year. It was because of that radio time that Big Sean met Kanye West in 2005. Kanye allowed him to freestyle for him and that lead him to signing with G.O.O.D. Music in 2007 and later with Def Jam in 2008. Big Sean’s career increased due to the release of his debut album Finally Famous in 2011. He was recognized in 2012 as GQ magazine’s “Hottest Rookie” and he picked up honors at the 2012 BET Awards for “Best New Artist.” The Grammy-nominated artist followed up with successful releases of Hall of Fame (2013), Dark Sky Paradise (2015), and I Decided. (2017), which peaked at #1 on the Billboard charts. Since 2007, Big Sean has continued to release many mixtapes and was certified diamond by DatPiff for Detroit released in 2012. He has also released two collaborative albums: Twenty88 with Jhene Aiko, and most recently Double or Nothing with Metro Boomin.
