Big Sean Surprises Detroit Students at ‘Black Panther’ Screening, Announces Plans to Build New Theater
by DRAI’S / March 1, 2018
Drai’s resident rapper and proud Detroit native Big Sean is the latest of many to do the ‘Black Panther Challenge,’ and he took it to new heights! Being no stranger to giving back to his community, Sean arranged for a field trip in partnership with Emagine Theatres to bring 1,000 students from the Detroit Public Schools Community District for a Black Panther screening in Royal Oak. He made a surprise appearance to the students just before the movie started: “I think Black Panther is extraordinary. It’s one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen,” he told the kids. “I think it’s important for kids, especially Detroit Public School kids, just all kids, to see black superheroes. Because that’s what they are. That’s something that we rarely get to see. I’m not even trying to make it a race thing; I’m just keeping it real though. It’s important to see people of all colors of people being superheroes.” Sean joins fellow Drai’s residents Offset and TIP in surprising hundreds of kids for a special Black Panther screening. But that’s not all for Big Sean! In partnership with Emagine Theatres, Sean formally announced plans for his Sean Anderson Theatre. From the caption above, Detroit does not have a proper movie theater that plays new films outside of the suburbs, so this is the perfect initiative for Sean to give back to the community in a big way. The 10-12-screen theater is expected to open in 2020. “This is more than a dream come true,” he told reporters. “One of the aspirations if you do something creative, like music or any type of business, is to be an owner in something. So this is one of the first things outside of music that I am actually an owner in.” From all of us here at Drai’s, we want to congratulate Big Sean on this tremendous philanthropic gesture!
You can catch Big Sean’s return to the Drai’s LIVE stage this Saturday, March 3, as well as March 24 for his official birthday celebration!
